My understanding is that it provides some useful directivity
and perhaps some gain, but I expect a "shorty-forty" 2L Yagi
has more gain.  A 40M rotary dipole at 80 to 100 ft is also
a VERY GOOD radiator, usually better than single verticals.
I worked my first 300+ countries on 40M using various
rotary dipoles, included matched booms on 3L20 and TH6.
My CC 2L40 exhibits useful gain over my dipoles and verticals.
