Your not dreaming it has been done before. The local club uses a standard
fold over base plate and assembles 3 sections of tower and a 3 element
tribander. It takes several people to put the tower up. The base was held in
place by driving 4 3 or 4 foot lengths of rebar into the ground, the top of
the rebar was bent over 90 deg. Regular tent stakes were used to guy the
tower with. This was the main antenna for the 20 CW station. The other
stations used verticals and dipoles.
Now I would not recommend this method of erecting a tower except for
temporary situations like field day.
I have also seen a drive on base plate like you mentioned. I don't remember
where I saw it but I do know it was a web site showing a Rover station in
one of the UHF/VHF contests
