Something like that (exterior-grade plywood) is what I was thinking of.

It depends on the tower, but three boards fastened to cover the tower faces
up to 10 or 12 feet would work quite well.   If the tower has a broader face
than can handily be covered with boards then half or three quarter inch
exterior plywood should work.
