Rich, a few years ago John, ON4UN, was a house guest of mine for a few days
and I had the time to pick his brain about various antenna subjects. One of
the questions I asked him was the same as yours. John said the trees are
practically invisible to the antenna and in most cases have no effect on the
antenna or performance. During the winter DX season the sap in the trees
goes down and the trees have less moisture in them. He said a tree has to be
very large and hold a lot of moisture to be a problem.
At the time I was using an 80 Meter 4 Sq. with elevated radials in a pretty
heavily wooded area and mine seemed to work very well. Johns theory seemed
to hold true for my antennas then.
I only used the 4 Sq. for several years and then switched to a 80 Meter
Create 2 Element Rotary at about 120 feet. It our performs the 4 Sq.
