My self, I'd use what ever "bare" wire that was easily handled and not too 
fragile.  I like bare, #16 just deep enough to be missed by the lawn care 
machinery.

OTOH I've not had a good vertical up in years (since I lived in Breckenridge 
MI about 30 MI SW of Midland)
