NOT TRUE IN ALL CASES:

I used to have a 50KVA transformer on my property feeding my home and 
barn.  My HV feeder is buried for approximately 3/4 of a mile.  One wind 
storm last year the 21KV feeder about 4 miles down the road crossed the 
8KV line feeding my branch circuit and blew out the transformer!  
Statistically, in VA there are more issues with underground power lines 
(more outages due to lightning strikes, etc.) then overhead wires.

Just when you thought you'd be just a bit more resistance to the rath of 
mother nature ;-)
