I've been using a 1/2w vertical on 75m with great success. (305 countries).

I found that one of the secrets is to NOT end (series) feed it. If it is center 
fed, (ala horizontal dipole) the matching is obviously simpler. 
Mechanically...a bit more work.

For a very good description of vertical 1/2w antennas, "Google"  
                   NBS TN-611

It is the description of the WWV 1/2 vertical antenna farm. good drawings and 
design specs for 2.5, 5, 10, 15 and 20mc. 75, 60, 40, 20 and 15m can be 
interpolated from the numbers.

For 30 meters, the dimensions are right on. Good luck and 73!
