Hi Jon,

The brake clanking is music to my ears, it's a great aid in trouble shooting
rotor problems.  I recommend
Raising the antenna to 90 or 100 feet to lessen the noise.  Sounds to me
like your rotor is performing 
"as advertised"

Why do you feel the need to "take it apart"?  Does it rotate the antenna? 
The brake on a Hy-Gain rotor is very loud. It's a large AC operated solenoid

that pulls the brake wedge away from the braking collar.
