I wouldn't give Force 12 credit for fundamental concepts and
definitions any EE student learned by staying awake in class .

I would venture to say that a significant fraction (probably not a
majority, though) of antenna makers and sellers didn't have a lot of
formal antenna background. There's plenty of people who take a standard
cookbook design (e.g. perhaps one of the old NBS designs) and iterate it
with different manufacturing design, etc. do some field tests and put it
out for sale.
