My point was that if he had some of the "Old" equipment in the shack wouldn't it be dangerous.

Ranges and dryers of yesteryear had only 3 wires, 2 hot and neutral/ground.
They had to be on a dedicated circuit so as to not energize some other
appliance on the same feed if there was an open neutral.

Now days these appliances all require 4 wires. Old ones are still
grandfathered as far as I know.

But the discussion was about the main feed to the breaker panel.

Aren't there are a number of old commercial rigs that violate this in

I think our old kitchen range violated it as well, as IIRC I had to
change the wiring when we put in a new cook top.

Imagine something like a washing machine where the neutral is
connected to the frame and down the line the neutral opens up. Now
the
frame has the full "hot" voltage on it. The next person to do a load
will be lucky if they live.
But that's a false argument, Bill, because, as you noted, it is
illegal to use the green wire to carry load current, and it's illegal
to connect neutral to ground at any point but the service entrance.
And also because all wiring within my buildings, and in the similar
system I described to Shawn, DOES include both neutral and ground
conductors. I've been through that in both of my buildings, making
sure that there are no such improperly connected loads.
