Thanks for the replies, both here and direct. One actually suggested I
commit the heresy of reading the Soundblaster manual (thanks Dale) and
lo, there is a connector on the AWE64 card to connect to the line which
normally goes to the speaker. Now I got simulator cw in the phones, in
stereo yet. Ham heaven!
I simply cut the wires to the internal speaker, put an appropriate
connector on the wire from the PC motherboard and plugged it into the
AWE64.

Disadvantages:

You lose any beeps produced during the Power On Self Test (POST) of the
computer because the speaker is disconnected and the AWE64 presumably
isn't working yet during Power Up. This isn't a problem during normal
operation, but if the computer detects a problem during POST it emits
coded beeps from the speaker so you can tell what area the problem is
in. With this setup you won't hear them.

Any little chimes, dings, whistles or farts that Windows chooses to emit
will show up in the earphones. There is a way of turning these off
which I don't recall at the moment.

I haven't tried this from DOS. I run TRLog in a win98 DOS box.

Tack,

Thanks for the info on RUFZ. I have used it but I particularly like
TRLog simulator as it gives me practice also with TRLog. Also, if I get
the call wrong it tells me right then and I have to keep sending it
until I get it right. Very instructive. I still keep thinking 7L
stations are in ZL. Old habits die hard. I also get a rate display of
completed contacts per hour which I like.

Thanks again for your help everyone.
