If I remember correctly, TR uses 6 bits of a byte to hold the bandmap decay 
time.  The largest number one can store in 6 bits is 63.  If you increased it
to use all 8 bits of a byte, the largest number you could store would be
255, which would give you the four hours (plus 15 minutes) you want.

But, I'm pretty sure that TR is using the other two bits of that byte
for something else important.

You never have to wait ten minutes for someone to give their callsign.
Just call them and ask.
