We bought one of those head band magnifiers ..
They are less than $10......

There are some that you can even wear over glasses 
for more magnification.....

We are a "Few" years older than you ..   but with the
magnifier we can still solder IC's and the connectors ...

 I tried those RS connectors but invariably got too much solder on them
 and the pins would not fit properly in the hole.  Maybe I should blame
 that on my eye sight which at age 57 is not improving;-)
