John,

I for one have relegated the AC97 for use only as a music player.
I have
found several programs with which the AC97 does not work
satisfactorily.

So if you are driving towards a 2 radio setup using two sound
cards I would
add in TWO PCI sound boards. I just got an additional two
SoundBlaster 16
PCI cards to install in my latest xmas present to ship in mid-Jan
which
will become the HF radio computer. It is NOT necessary to have
two
different types of sound cards - they come up labeled differently
anyway
eg, mine say Creative SB AudioPCI and Creative SB AudioPCI (2)
and then
SoundMAX Digital Audio for the AC97. The trick was getting the
AC97 out
ot the way, I uninstalled it, installed the two 16 PCI cards then

reinstalled the AC97 (really because I could not get my then copy
of
Writelog to reliably use any other than device [0] on my
particular
machine. Will see how that plays on the new screamer.

Good Luck
