Maybe some of the very old Matrox cards would only
present a single virtual desktop to the operating
system, e.g. the union of all the monitors = desktop.

But all the Matrox G-series cards I've used in the last
3+ years allow you to choose whether you want the
aforementioned behaviour (yuck) ... or independent
monitors (more akin to your ATI description).

I prefer the latter - and let Windows XP manage the
displays. Easiest way to determine if you're running
in that mode - is whether the task bar extends over
all monitors ... or is on just one.
