Hi Alan,

The registration code is saved in the windows registry and is typically not
easy to find.  If you need your registration code again, and if you’ve
purchased since mid-2010 or later, just email me and I can look it up.

WriteLog should find your saved logs and if it doesn’t, you can always open
saved logs by navigating to the directory where they are at and double clicking
the log file to open them in WriteLog.

Thanks,

Steve N9OH

WRITELOG opened and worked in 8.0. No longer opens or works in 8.1. This PC in
question came with WIN 8.0 installed. It never had WIN 7.

I found my contest files to have been saved in a folder
DOCUMENTS/WRITELOG/CONTEST (Not in my WRITELOG PROGRAM FILES x86 folder as I
might have suspected). I made a copy of the DOCUMENTS/WRITELOG/CONTEST folder
and saved it on a removable drive. So my contest files are safe.

Since upgrading to WIN 8.1 I cannot open WRITELOG at all. It tells me I have a
bad or expired registration code.

I intend to start over with a new purchase of the current full version of
WRITELOG on July 1st. Hopefully the new install will be able to find the
contest files in the folder DOCUMENTS/WRITELOG/CONTEST.

Just for the info, where is the registration code saved and how is it named?

TIA, Alan, K7ACZ

I think you need to fix the problem by seeing it as not a single problem but
several smaller ones.

Based on what you're saying I think you need to find and back-up the contest
files. You can use windows file manager to accomplish this.

Now - having said that it suddenly occurs to me that it also sounds like you
did an upgrade from Win 7 to Win 8?? If so, even if it's too late I still have
to say you should nevber do something as major as that without a back-up of all
critical files.

It is possible that depending on what options you entered during the install,
you might have lost everything on the original Win 7 system.

Spend some time trying to understand what happened during the win 8 install.
That will be key to solving the rest of the problem.

As I may have said before, Writelog will install with an expired code once you
use the original install files as downloaded. Then you can update the last one
before the code would have expired (based on the dates).

In any event WL cannot find the contest files for you so I would make that a
priority. If you find them then we can advance to the next phase.

Yes, I do believe WIN 8.1 is the cause of this problem. But I am not familiar
enough with WIN 8.0 or 8.1 to figure out how to find this.

I can find the WRITELOG Folder OK and see all the files in it but don't know
what to look for as far as the registration code.

The old PC I mentioned that I can still access WRITELOG on uses WIN 7.

I have the original registration code on the email order confirmation but it
has expired and no longer works.

If I start all over on the new PC running WIN 8.1 will the new install find my
previous contest logs and save them? WRITELOG did work FB on this new PC as it
came with WIN 8.0. Then I was told I should allow the PC to upgrade to 8.1 for
better security. (Every time I turned it on it would ask if I wanted to update
to 8.1). Since updating from WIN 8.0 to 8.1 I can no longer open WRITELOG.

It is only fair I pay for a new subscription. I just hope not to lose my
contest files from my original subscription.

I run Writelog on win 8/8.1 1. Be sure to show hidden folder in Win8/8.1 2.
Find virtual store/ local folder ( depends which windows you running ...PRO
gives full paths just as win XP) 3. Create or find your Writelog      I will
see if i can make a guide how i made my smooth setup ;)

Thanks for the info.

When trying a brand new installation I got to the box where it asks for my
call sign and registration code. On entering my registration code it tells
me it is invalid or expired so I will order the program and start as a new
user. I just hope the WRITELOG files I already have on the PC won't mess up
the new installation and that my prior contest files will be saved.

I purchased the program in Feb 2013 so it has been a year and has expired.
However, I thought you could still open and use the program but could not do
updates without a new subscription. But it will not attempt to open; it just
tells me I have a bad registration code.

What I find strange is I pulled my old PC that I no longer use out of the
garage on which I first installed WRITELOG on. When I click on the WRITELOG
shortcut the program opens FB and shows ver 11.14B Sept 2013. There are no
contest files in the program because I never used that PC in a contest. But

I find it strange that the program will open normally and I would guess
would work using ver 11.14B if I wanted to use it that way. But I will get a
new install for the current contest PC.

Alan

The version you purchased and updates for a year should work just fine so I
think the issue is to simply re-install the version you bought. You should
have an email which came with the necessary instructions and links.

I do not use Windows 8 myself and having just upgraded my shack computer
from Win XP pro, I will probably skip Win8 altogether unless I end up buying
another PC - so I am not familiar with the various defaults in terms of
directories.

I suspect the reason Writelog is not running and referring to an invalid
code is because its looking in a directory and not finding your valid code
- which is no doubt on the computer just not "visible" to writelog.

Try a clean install and see if that works.
