I used one on a 2 x 4-1000 back in the day. It took almost a year of sitting in my garage before it didn't drip oil. still smelled.... I think the oil was more for heat removal than voltage breakdown

Hi Jim, I used one that came off our power lines back in the 70's when they were updating the grid. The oil was for heat transfer. I pulled it from the oil and let it dry out for a few months. It nev

Back in the '90s I used two in parallel for my EME amplifier. It wasn't that I was running great power (1500W out) but they were 13.2 kV pigs that I removed a bunch of wire from to get them down to w

As others have said, the oil was for heat removal and shouldn't affect the voltage rating. I had a larger one that I wish I hadn't sold. I was a lot younger and in top shape. I could barely lift to m

Hello Paul, You lot Stateside are very lucky being able to acquire these "pole pigs". Here in the UK I have never, ever found a source for them, or even found a linesman who knows what happens to old

I did in the 90's, for making the PS for a 3CX3000A7 amp. I bought it from a guy who "salvaged" it at work. I believe it was a 10KVA, very heavy. I had to "Unwind" the input wires in reverse directio

I'm a little concerned about people just dumping the oil. Transformer oil is a famous source of PCB's. How old does a pole pig have to be before you can safely say there are no PCB's in the oil? I us

If it smells like oil, it is oil!  If it doesn't, then it's probably PCB, except for some of the really new stuff and you are unlikely to run across any of that in retired pole pigs. It has been a ve
