Does anyone know about the old TV door knob caps. Typically 500 pf at 20 kv. Are they mica or ceramic and are they capable of handling any sizable current? Thanks Gary K4FMX

I need either a 1000 pf or two 500 pf door knob capacitors with at least a 10 kV rating. These are for use as loading capacitors in a 160-meter single band liner using a pair of GI-7bT Russian tubes.

Why do you want at least a 10KV rating while the capacitors will not see more then 500V? More important is to select a RF doorknob with low TCC. 73 Peter I need either a 1000 pf or two 500 pf door kn

Basically, the other door knobs that I obtained for a VERY good price were 20 kV! Definitely overkill. I "solved" the problem by putting 2 0.01 mfd capacitors in series with the 1400 pf door knob fix

You don't want to use doorknobs as loading caps especially on 160. they won't handle the current. Learned that the hard way. When I knew less than I do now (which still isn't much) I used a Centralab

Rob, It depends on the capacitor. The ones intended for high RF currents are marked to show the maximum reactive current they can handle. Some time ago I had the same experience as you, with a cap li

Hi Glen, Interested in the parameters on the GI-7B tubes. I have a pair here to put together. What plate voltage do you have on them? How much plate current? How much bias? Plate idle current? Grid c

I don't really have enough plate voltage on them right now. Under load ended up with around 1700 volts. But, that is what I get out of the transformer that I had in the junque box! The plate current

Real Centralab and other US RF doorknobs are mostly 5, 7.5, and 15KV in the most common 2 sizes. The caps in Heath SB amps are cheap non RF rated that will often do bad things on 10M. Check out High

Those are pricey when new but even NOS 15KV 857's are often $5-10 at hamfests and the small ones can be had for $1-3 in perfect condition. Appearance counts, but dirt doesnt. Huh you say? An RF abuse
