We have a recessed can light in our shower. The tag inside states that a 60 W incandescent in the max it can accomodate, but even a 60 W reflector bulb has pretty wimpy output. I'd beenusing a 150 W

I think the rating has to do more with heat dissipation. Speaking of which... I have a couple of open rubber covered light sockets hanging from a box in my garage, the type used for quickie lighting

That's interesting as in their on-line FAQ, Cree says they approve of installation in can fixtures. We've had 42 W CFLs in there for the last 8 years and never seen evidence of overheating. However,

Lumens, gentlemen, please! IMHO, bulbs should also receive a rating based on how much heat they generate. Clearly, there is a difference in the heat output of an Edison bulb that consumes 60 W of pow

The 90 W-equivalent flood I got is rated at 1500 lumens and consumes 18W. If all of that 18 W is dissipated as heat (unlike an incandescent, it isn't), the can enclosure is being operated at 30% of i

Actually, we know this: The TYPICAL 60 Watt soft white edison bulb generates 800 lumens. Now, if there was 100% luminous efficiency, you get 683 lm/W, so you are getting 1.17 watts of actual light, a

All good analysis, quite sufficient as far as fire hazard is concerned. But there's another issue -- that 13W of heat has to go somewhere, and depending on the enclosure, some or all may stay within
