I was wondering if there is a "sure-fire" mod for the ALS600 so that my
Kenwood TS450 won't destroy the finals. According to Ameritron, the Kenwood
generates a full power spike at key-up which eventually blows the finals
(Kenwood doesn't acknowledge this, of course). I sent the amp in to
Ameritron 4 times during the 1 year warranty to have the finals replaced.
It would have cost me about $260 (labor not included) each time to have it
repaired outside of the warranty. Ameritron installed a mod (capacitors
were added) that supposedly fixes the problem but since the amp is out of
warranty I'm "afraid" of blowing it up again. The amp works great
otherwise. I can't afford to replace finals every couple of months and it's
a real pain to have it fail in the middle of a QSO (especially during a
contest).
