I don't know,, just seems weird to me not to actually use what the rules 
instruct the entrant to do. 

Maybe I'm just sentimental or something,,  I got my Novice in Sept of 
75, and my buddy and I were just getting on the air with rock bound 
stuff like DX-35's and similar.  And the local club invited us to come 
to a contest and help out during the graveyard shift,

we had no idea what they were talking about,  but arrived at midnight, 
and with the help of the control op  these two novices never had so much 
fun on the radio in our lives and that was playing in the phone ss  that 
year..

Been hooked ever since.
