I disagree. One of the many marks of a top-notch contester, is that he/she
can turn a non-contester found on the air into contest credit, and do so
efficiently and gracefully. Perhaps creating a new contester in the
process. It is not a skill that I am very good at, but I am in awe of those
who do it so well.
There are several important contests (e.g. ARRL Sweepstakes) where this
skill is what actually elevates folks to #1.
