I agree it sounded like fake news to me, especially the part about CQ getting on and telling them that they would be DQed.

Given that contest sponsors require the exact frequency to be recorded -
this seems like a fairy tale, or someone who just has a gripe against
contesters. It would also be easy to prove someone is on 30m, as they have
SDR recordings of the entire contest bands now and would know if someone is
there or not.

Your theory about DXpeditions makes sense. The 3C guys were there and 9U
was on 30 RTTY too (I worked them). They work split and it takes up a good
portion of the band.

Interesting item posted on the QRZ.COM forum this evening. Now, I don't
believe it... but I have to ask anyway...

The allegation posted by this induhvidual is as follows, and I quote:

"Downside? Yes. When you wander off to a WARC band during a contest, hoping
find some relief, they are sometimes already there. On two occasions in the
last two years I have headed to 30 meters, only to find it taken over by
RTTY contesters. They stayed at it last time until someone from CQ magazine
showed up and told them that they were all disqualified for the CQ event if
they submitted 30m contacts in a contest. Hard to understand but true. If
you get into a contest, wouldn't you want to know the rules?

Other than that blatant black eye, I like contesters."

Incidentally, despite that last line, previous posts from this induhvidual
(I am deliberately not naming him at this time, if you know who it is,
please don't either) indicate that he is not exactly a fan of contests...
But I digress...

Like I said, I don't believe the allegation. Regardless, I have to ask if
this rings a bell with anyone, did something even close to this allegation
actually happen in the last 2 years?

I mean, really? Even if someone who wasn't a big-gun (or didn't care) was
operating "in the contest" on 30, someone from CQ Magazine shows up out of
the blue to chase them off? That's so absurd on the face of it that it's
not even worth the paragraph to debunk it.

Personally, I think the real story is that his favorite frequency was
already in use by someone, possiblly a small Dxpedition or a semi-rare DX
station, said station was running "contest style", and as a result, he put
2
& 2 together... And came up with 22.

And yes, I've already called him out on it. Well, won't be the first time
I
get called names. (Amazing how some tellers of tall tales don't like it
when their tall tale is exposed as just that.) But just in case there is
even a smidgen of truth to the tale... Which I doubt... I have to ask.

So, anyone ever hear of anything like this? In recent memory, that is?
