We have a RG-1000 that is running Turbocell v 3.88 and it doesn't have the 8
user limitation that the newer versions have.
We have 20 users on this base station and it runs just fine.
So there is something in the software that is stopping us from adding more
then 8 on the a RG. Otherwise we would probably upgrade our licenses. But we
will just upgrade it with a AP-1000 instead.

That has nothing to do with it. A 486 running that lean of an OS can
support more than 8 subscribers easily. KarlNet does not allow more
than 8 subscribers most likely so you will be required to get more
expensive hardware. They must have some deal with Proxim so users will
be forced to upgrade to the AP-1000 if they want to support more
subscribers. It is purely a marketing strategy.
