might I suggest you ditch mrtg and use
SNR(http://www.raccoon.kiev.ua/projects/snr/),rrdtool(http://people.ee.ethz.
ch/~oetiker/webtools/rrdtool/) and cacti (http://www.raxnet.net/)? rrdtool
is from the same guys who do mrtg.  The 3 tools together are VERY powerful
