Thanks all for your tips.
Although I had checked out the original cable with an ohmmeter, it
apparently developed a loose or broken connection somewhere when I moved it
around a bit, causing the 80m problem. I tried a different cable and all
was OK (including the CW keying line that hadn't worked either).
