Alex,
The availability of a real Model 301 being very low, you might
consider building one.
After about my 12th ("dozenth" doesn't sound right) contest with
my 301, I can tell you there is probably no better, yet no
simpler project one could undertake to add to their station. The
convenience to not have to reach up to the rig everytime you want
to move around the band cannot be fully appreciated until you sit
in front of the rig for 4, 8, 12, 24 or more hours.
Electrically, there's only three parts involved: optical encoder,
cable and DB-25 connector. Cost? About $100. Time? Probably
no more than an hour or so once you have all the parts. Value? I
wouldn't go so far to say priceless (If the price is right, I'd
sell mine in a minute, knowing, of course, that I could build
another in a fairly short time.).
