MRF497 ought to be a good match and is good to 50W rather than 40.

You can also use MRF455, which is the tabbed device you mentioned.  It is a
four-tab device designed for stripline circuitry and will be a bear to mount
and heat sink, but it is otherwise functionally compatible.

I have a little diagram I've been hanging on to that appeared on a French
web site a while back, which shows installation of a '455 where a '477 was
in a Uniden radio of some kind.  I sent it to Shawn off-list, if anyone else
wants it drop me an e-mail.  You will need to be able to read French! :)
