Antenna "tuners" (matchboxes) do not really tune (resonate) an
antenna -- they just match its impedance to the Tx or Rx. This is
generally not very important at the sub-milliwatt power levels
encountered in receive-only systems. I have never found that a
matchbox improved reception significantly, although I hesitate to say
that there is no antenna it could ever help.
Actually tuning (resonating) the antenna, on the other hand, can be a
great help -- but that is not what matchboxes (with or without noise
bridges) do. (And it can get old fast if you change frequencies much.)
Best regards,
Charles
