A good LA-2A is worth more than my whole radio station ! An inexpensive, AKA
Berringer, type compressor limiter set correctly sounds pretty good...and so
does a radio operator who can speak clearly and not eat a bag of peanuts while
talking on the radio ! Hi Hi !

I can agree with Jim on this.
Proper use of compression {emphasis on "proper} does raise the average
udio level. Excessive compression can cause a "pumping" sound.
ompression with incorrect attack and release times, largely defined by the
rogram content, can also make things better or worse. Compressors with
utomatic variable ratio attack and release times plus variable input to
utput ratios do a really nice job to hold the audio level up and do not
rtificially color the sound. The Teltronics LA-2A is a good example. Also
he CBS Labs VolumeMax is another good one.

Why? Compression VERY effectively increases talk power IF done well. 10
dB of compression on peaks should be considered a practical limit with a
rig that does it well. And 10 dB is like multiplying TX power by 10.
Virtually ALL commercial broadcast audio is compressed, much of it by even
more than that.
