I can explain why the tuner has to retune on the same frequency.......as stated by the operator " Leaving it on that frequency, a minute or so later a second try also took 15 seconds. A third tune, on the same frequency another minute later, took 10 seconds." Clearly the operator asked the ATU to perform a second and third tune routine on the same frequency. Why? No needed to do this in my experience.

Every time the TUNE routine is activated the ATU will run through the entire matching routine as it should. Once the match is obtained, it is retained in memory for that band. Moving to other bands and running the ATU routine will then attain a match and that data is stored. Then returning to the original band and frequency the original match data is loaded and a match exists without running the TUNE routine.

Now to confirm the match is retained, switch to CW mode and press the PTT button. The SWR will be then indicated showing the match previously attained for that band. It is not necessary to press the TUNE button the "check" what match exists unless one has changed frequency or band and the ATU routine has not been run for that band/frequency.

John,

I cannot explain as to why your Eagle tuner has to retune on the same freq unless your actually disabling it and then reenabling when you press to tune again. If you hold the button too long you'll do just that.

As to the ATU latency... It has been discussed and explained several times in years past. A quick search on the email forum will provide you with all kinds of enlightenment.

I'd welcome some comments on the internal Eagle AT (Model 599AT).

Here's mine: On 3570 KHz, where my MFJ-269 shows the old trap doublet has an SWR of 2.7, the Eagle took 15 seconds to tune. Leaving it on that frequency, a minute or so later a second try also took 15 seconds. A third tune, on the same frequency another minute later, took 10 seconds.

On 40m, where the SWR is 2.1, tuning takes 7 seconds.

I know the old antenna here at the camp needs work... but that behavior on 80 doesn't seem right. The manual (p. 37) says the AT is "designed to recall the last tuned setting for a given band." Maybe I don't understand how that memory works, but I don't think the MFJ-293B that I have at home would behave like this.
