Thanks. I will try all of that. I should also start looking for a
processor board. I am suspecting that Gary could be right and it got fried
somehow. Maybe I can replace the processor itself. They appear to still be
available at a reasonable cost. The ROM isn't however.
I could get lucky and a contact is oxidized after all this time.

You are doing the right things, to unplug and replug or clean the pins.
Now, you need to unplug each multi-pin cable one at a time and slide each
back into its socket. That may catch some oxidation of contacts and remedy
it.
Another observational trouble shooting aid, is to check the temperature of
the ICs to see if anything is abnormally hotter than its like components.
After 15 years, contacts in plugs and sockets may have light oxidation
presenting the symptoms you report.
Also, solder that old may have a marginal connection that has failed.
Look with magnification for any cracked solder joints, not well wetted
joints, and anything especially in the logic circuits.
