Hey Gary,
I agree, and keep mine turned on all the time. Like you, I also preferred the waterfall display. Seeing the video of the large screen pan adapter with cw skimmer impressed me enough to ask the question. But reading from Carl what is involved to get the same on my orion, I'm now retreating fast, and will remain content to use the one on the radio. But bringing back the waterfall would be nice. It was very soothing, though it did make me run back and forth to the head quite a bit.

With all due respect, the “panadapter” in the Orion is not all that bad. I used one for many years and never felt a need for a better one, though I really liked the one version of firmware that offered the waterfall display option a few revisions ago. I wonder why they took this out?

The waterfall is far more useful than is the simple spectrum scope display.

Hey Carl,
Tnx for the input, but I'll just say now that I'll not pursue the pan adapter idea any further. Nothing against ur software, I used that for my orion some yrs ago, and it was great. But everything else that you listed makes my head hurt. I do appreciate ur reply and offer to help though.

Maybe I can get somewhere with the logging program idea. Though I have tried and failed twice before to set up logging programs, it would be nice to get something running that would make it simple and easy to submit scores for qso parties. The last time I actively participated in the Virginia QSO party, when it was over, I had to take my paper log, then re-do on the score sheet, then submit it, which was very time consuming. I think if I could get a logging program working, it would take the post-party work out of it and make it fun again.

My N4PY Orion software is step 1.

The second thing you need is a one wire mod to bring the sub-receiver
antenna connection out to the spare jack.

The third thing you need is an SDR receiver that can be controlled via
HDSDR. The SDRplay SDR receiver for $150 is the easiest way to go.
That's what I am using with my Orion and it works great.

Once you have all the items, I can give you a step by step setup to do
all this.

I am slowly being pulled into the 21st century, one technology upgrade at a time. So now it’s time to for me to try some new things.

1 I would like to add some type of pan adapter to my Orion 2. I guess I can figure out on my own how to add a second monitor for that purpose, but I would appreciate any help regarding a pan adapter addition for the Orion 2. In short, what all do I need to make this work? I read somewhere that N4PY software is needed. Beyond that, pse help me to understand what else is involved. I did see on youtube a demonstration with another brand of radio which seemed to incorporate cw skimmer with the pan adapter. Is this possible with the Orion 2?

2 I still use paper logs, and plan to continue doing so until I leave this world. But I’ve been playing around with morse runner, and see the need for computer logging when doing qso parties, and heaven forbid, if I ever actually decide to try to do a cw contest. So any suggestions on what logging program would most likely be compatible for state qso parties, the qcwa qso parties, the cwt tests, and contest logging would be appreciated.

3 I suppose this also means that if I can figure out how to download and set up this logging software, I’ll need to figure out how to use the keyboard to send my call, 599, etc. Is this simple to set up once the logging software has been installed?

I’m covering several different topics here, so feel free to reply to me direct if you want to at w4tje@wiredog.com
