As an alternative to a sligshot, I use a "junior bow," available at most of
the large sports centers. These are quite a bit smaller than the larger
adult bows, but they have more than enough power to get the job done up to
100 ft.
Like Barry, I let 8 lbs line feed right off the spool, then tie Dacron rope
to the end to pull it back through the trees. I weight the arrow with a
large number of turns of ordinary solder. I just keep winding solder until
I get enough weight. I then wind a couple turns of electrical tape over the
solder to keep it in place on the arrow's tip. The primary reason for the
weighted tip is to ensure that the arrow will drop down without resistance
since even 8 lbs test line can bind through tree branches.
