The commercial boxes generate signals which are 90 and 180 degrees from
the input and are built to work with verticals which are spaced 1/4 and
1/2 wavelength.  It is possible to build phased arrays with other
spacings. You need a copy of ON4UN's Low band DXing book which details
numerous directive arrays using verticals as well as many other types of
low band antennas. It is published by ARRL. 73, Dan, N5AR
