But Tom, my 2003 Ford Explorer AM/FM antenna has a stainless steel
antenna whip. It also has a "wrap" of what looks like wire.

My car antennas are wrapped because they are fiberglass.
Reception is terrible without the wire on the outside of the
non-metallic core.
When they were stainless they weren't wrapped.
