Activity always varies a lot in this area (central Illinois). In a typical
VHF contest, I have noticed that activity happens in a flurry at the start,
kind of tapers off after a few hours but keeps going to maybe ~11 pm local
time, then there's not much of anything till the next morning at, say, ~7
am. Then it picks up again. There has always been a surge of activity
starting a couple hours before contest end and going through to the end.
A huge Es or tropo opening may change that, but they are unpredictable.
There was a huge tropo opening in the August 2008 ARRL UHF contest on
Sunday morning and I was working stations up to 500 miles away all the way
through 10 GHz.
