I wonder if the original problem posted was HF, not VHF noise?

Subject: Re: [VHFcontesting] Generators

Andy, K1RA and I have tested several generators for the K8GP rover. I was
not willing to pay the big $$$ for a Honda generator so I bought the 2200
watt Preditor inverter. We were blown away with how nice it was, VERY quiet
mechanically and it ran all of our stuff just fine using a 50A Astron linear
power supply, no RFI at all. After doing some upgrades to amps, we needed
more power (that's surprising isn't it!!). Having had great luck with the
Preditor, I got the 3500 watt model and it worked pretty much the same. Very
quiet both mechanically and RF noise.

Last, we upgraded amps again to 50V LDMOS devices and wanted to use a
switching power supply. The switcher was a Sorenson, very high quality and
VERY quiet in the area of RF noise. We did all our testing plugged to house
power and then connected to the generator. WOW - the noise was HORRIBLE !!!
WTF?? It turns out that we tried several different switching power supplies
and when running from an inverter generator (which I guess in reality is a
switcher) the two together generates a lot of hash.

I then looked on line and found a dual fuel (gas and propane) traditional
generator that had a 240V outlet and got it. Cheaper than the Preditor 3500w
inverter, maybe a bit heavier but being able to use propane made it better
for us and the 240v outlet is great for running higher powered amps. It's a
bit more noisy mechanically, the Preditor generators were fully enclosed.

We used a Honda EU2200i with no problem. I haven't heard any complaints
about this generator.
