Helllo,

The following was posted to the reflector several days ago. "This problem
has nothing to do with Writelog other than the symptom is seen on the
Packet Terminal screen. The problem has to do with the TNC, PK-12,
connected to the computer running Writelog. Presently getting a string
weird characters when the PK-12 is started. This came on strange as it
seemed to be a gradual problem that started a week ago.

Initially would see several lines of the weird characters that would
correspond to the " AEA PK-12 Packet Controller AX.25 Level......." then
the cmd: prompt would be seen. The connect command could be entered and
connection with the local cluster node was made. Spots were received and
could be sent.

This happened for several days until last Wednesday got a couple lines of
weird characters and no cmd: prompt. The second line stopped and the TNC
didn't response to the keyboard (echo off). Also, all the monitor LEDs are
lighted except for the xmit LED. This is now the situation everytime the
TNC is started.

The connection cable has been checked and another working serial port on
the computer was tried with no success. The memory battery was measured at
3.1 Volts."

Since then the following was done to try and find a solution to the problem:
Two other PK-12s were obtained (of unknown quality). Both didn't work when
tried. The status LEDs on the new PK-12s were all off vs the first one had
all the status LEDs on (except the XMT). The memory battery was
disconnected and reconnected in one of the "new" PK-12s and now its status
LEDs are all lighted except the XMT LED, same as the first PK-12. Could
this be an indication that the first PK-12's battery was starting loose
charge and eventually it lost enough to not be able to keep the memory
retained? Tried both the PK-12s with the status LEDs on without the
battery connected with Writelog, DX4Win, and MixW2 but didn't work.

If the memroy in the PK-12s was lost due to the memory battery backup
failure, how do you restore the memory once the battery is fixed?

        73,
        Mike, K4GMH
