When I tried to upgrade WL from 10.68F to 10.69D I discovered that my
registration code had expired last Oct. and I needed to renew in order to
install 10.69D. Sent Ron K5DJ the renewal fee via PayPal and shortly after
received my new registration code along with installation instructions.
Immediately ran into a problem related to Vista.
Ron's instructions were to edit the wlogkey.ini file to modify the
registration code in the [Configuration] section. His instructions say to
"...click START, click Run, type wlogkey.ini click ok." First problem under
Vista is to find Run! For some unknown reason MS moved the Run box in Vista
to Start/Accessories/Run. Once I found Run the wlogkey.ini file opened in
Notepad and I edited the registration code as instructed. Next problem was
when I tried to save the edited file. Notepad generated an error message:
"Cannot create the C:\Windows\wlogkey.ini file. Make sure that the path and
file name are correct." I immediately felt this was a Vista caused problem
and I was correct.
Under Vista the C:\Windows folder and all files within are read only and
cannot be modified, even by the Administrator! I researched file
permissions, but quickly got lost in the swamp. My solution was to turn off
User Account Control, which required a reboot, and then edit the wlogkey.ini
file. This time Vista let me save the modified file with no interference.
I then reactivated User Account Control and did another reboot. I then
downloaded and installed wl1069full-pi39su3.exe without incident. In the
course of the installation a box opened with my call and the new
registration code from the wlogkey.ini file already filled in so I didn't
have to enter it again. Keep this in mind if you run Vista and need to
modify your registration code in the future.
