I remember in the old days before variacs and test meters that my "Elmer" used
a light bulb in series with one side of the a.c. mains to limit current an act 
as an
indicator. If the two windings are "bucking" the bulb would light to full 
brilliance.
At least I think this is how it worked...it has been 40+ years since I 
witnessed this
procedure!
