Hi Phil,

You can not select enough voltage breakdown for a worse case 
scenario in a tank circuit, unless you include a shutoff or spark gap 
or limit unloaded Q. All you can do is pick something reasonable.

If you do not remove the energy from the tank somehow, the 
voltage will go out of sight, or something will breakdown and start 
dissipating power.

One of my favorite demonstrations is a class AB MRF150 FET 
running on 12 volts, driving a big pi-network tank. It's easy to get 
over 100 volts at the input of the tank when the load is shorted and 
the tuning cap set for maximum voltage at the FET.
