I suppose one way to improve matters would be to make the ALC closer to AGC,
with a fairly high gain, and a voltage delay. The older rigs with 6146s which
derived ALC from the onset of grid current were a lot worse than a properly
designed system would be - theyr eally did shut the door too late. However, to
get it to work well, you would have to design the whole system from a knowledge
of the gain control characteristics of the exciter in terms of power against
volts and its phase shift against frequency, and making a 'universal' amplifier
ALC is probably not on.
Maybe somebody knows how repeatable modern rigs are in their output power/ALC
voltage characteristics?
