A human beeing with his diseases is thousand times more complex and
critical than an amplifier althoug both can be ill.
While experimenting with a human beeing has moral implications because
of possible consequences, the amplifier consequences because of a wrong
test can be yes destructive but all remains a matter of money and lost
time.
Jokes and specific tube instabilities apart, a wrong layout or socket
type (that one for a 4CX1000, for example) or the improper wiring are
often the reason for homebrew amplifiers inefficiency, failures and
instabilities.
A socket, a wiring and a layout that works for VHF (in a similar
configuration, i.e. Gg and PI) is generally quite stable at lower
frequencies as HF.
Shielding of input and output, avoiding long wire paths and big
distances between components can't be enough to cure all problems but
surely doesn't go in the wrong direction.
