At my place of employment a young man followed
proper procedure by applying the shorting stick to the
tank circuit of an S band cross field amplifier before
working on the just tested unit. For some unknown
reason he failed to power down the unit and the stick
was taken from him in a literally blinding flash. He
suffered some minor burns and short term vision problems
but was able to return to work in a few weeks. He was
however not the same happy person as before and the
the "stick" was replaced with a much more robust version
sans any added "tricks" such as resistors and relays.
