Leonardo Devinci and Isacc newton drew up some drawings on a self propelled 
vehicle and never built anything.

In 1769 a Frenchman named Cugnot built the first steam powered vehicle for 
military purposes. It was called a "military tractor". That's what it was a 
three wheeled tractor, used to pull arsenal equipment around. The next he built 
was a tricycle looking thing that you could ride but crashed it into a wall 
making him the very first vehicle accident. But still, not a four wheeled 
powered vehicle. Some might call this an automobile but I never did. More like 
the first motorcycle.

In 1789 a US millright named Oliver Evans built the very first land vehicle for 
civilian use. This amonted to a wagon with a steam engine on it. This was the 
first patent and the very first four wheeled land vehicle that you could ride. 
Really, I guess it was the first truck since it had a bed. Or call it a car 
without a back seat.

The first internal combustion engine was built in 1807 that used hydrogen and 
oxygen for fuel. It was still the first internal combustion engine. This was 
done by Francois Isaac de Rivaz of Switzerland.

In 1858 a Belgian, Jean Joseph Étienne Lenoi designed and built the first gas 
internal combustion engine.

In 1864 an Austrian, Siegfried Marcus hooked a 1 cyl. gas engine to a cart and 
ran it on a 500 foot drive.

1886 Gottlieb Daimler designed and built the first gas 4 wheeled motor vehicle. 
That same year, Karl benz got the first aptent for a gas fueled car.

During this time they still looked like a wagon with a small gas motor.

1891 Peugeot was the first manufacturer.

1893 America's first gasoline-powered commercial car manufacturers were Charles 
and Frank Duryea

1901 Olds moved to Detroit to start the Olds Motor Works. The first mass 
produced car was by Eli Olds (Oldsmobile) in the US.

1913 Henry Ford stepped into Detroit at Highland Park, and showed everyone how 
to build them. The assembly line was born.

Then it was on from there.
