10 watt 807's wewre common over here - we had a 10 watt input limit on 160. One
well known DXer had his '10watts' from no less than SIX 813's in push-pull
parallel. He lived next door to a ham who worked 80 SSB, and had TR4 or R4 -
a Drake rid. anyway. The second guy had a lot of trouble with the front end of
the Drake burning up - it would be working, then a day or two later, the
bandswitch was burned or the rx front end coil gone. He came home from the pub
one Saturday night, went up to bed but heard this noise from the shack. Had a
look, and theere was the bandswitch arcing in rhythem -
dah-dit-dah-dit--dah-dah-di-dah.........It was the top band guy! So ham#2 in
annoyance nips down the garden, garden shears in hand, cuts the 160m guys
hallieards, and down comes the 160m antenna. And the first guy continued to
work W's all night on 160.......
The names and callsigns are suppressed to protect the guilty!
