REPLY:

You are looking at only the absolute value of the number, ignoring the
minus sign. When you take in the minus sign, -57 is a smaller number
than -30. The smaller number, -57, has less distortion, just the
opposite of your statement above.

Take two men, one with a net worth of -$30 and one with a net worth of
-$57. Which is richer and which is poorer? The one with the higher
absolute number actually has less worth. Same with negative decibels.
