The cost differential is very large though - ?100 in Europe for a GS35 compared
to heaven-knows-what for a 8877. Sure, GS35Bs are lower mu and lower
efficiency than 8877s but they are great examples of barn-door engineering of
the old Mercedes-Benz or Massey Ferguson/Perkins diesel school: they may not
have the highest performance, they may be a bit big, heavy, ugly and old
fashioned but you have to abuse 'em far more in order to bust 'em.
Depending on the success criteria that you specify for yourself, they may be
your tube of choice. I suppose it depends what you want from your amp....

I would recommend against using a GS-35b. Their efficiency is low
compared to other types. I and several others have obtained
efficiencies in the range of about 50%, compared to about 60% for an
8877 and other comparable tubes.
Aside from poor efficiency they do seem to work well so that is not
necessarily a show-stopper, just something to consider.
