I do that with this reflector.  There are many places that will allow 
you to store photos, PDFs, and other binaries to which you can link.
I do make it a practice to never open links that don't tell me where 
they are going, even if they are in a thread in which I'm interested.  
Typically I prefer to receive mail as text only, but there are a number 
of netzines to which I subscribe which have made me violate that rule. 
OTOH to get the results I want when answering *some* mail I have to 
first receive it in plain text before answering.

It's quite likely if some one would offer to pay for the software 
license, the hardware upgrade, more storage, and the time to do the 
upgrade they might be willing to do it.  IIRC the entire operation is 
volunteer and contributions. When you have something that is stable and 
economical to run it, the thought of changing can be pretty daunting.
